The State of California contacted Paragon Bridge Works during the initial design phase of the project which was about two years before any construction had started. Paragon was able to give them some guidelines and general rules of thumb in order to allow them to better develop the site's roadway leading up to and beyond the bridge.
Once the project actually began, Paragon was hired to designed the bridge and abutments to HS20 (72,000 lbs) in order to allow fire trucks and other emergency vehicles. Paragon pre-built the bridge and guardrails and also undertook the installation of the bridge itself including setting the bridge itself onto the abutments.

Loading: HS20 (72,000 lbs)
Size: 89' X 18' with 88' clear span

- Abutments: Cast in place with caissons and sofa back concrete grade beam
Unique challenges:
Access was very difficult up a very windy narrow road. We had to carry the bridge decks down the last few miles of narrow windy roads with two front end loaders as it was impossible to do it any other way.
- Protected stream bed could not be used by any equipment.
- Bridge needed to clear span 88' and still handle HS20 which required that we add some unique bridge reinforcing.
